No More Poverty co-founders Julian Omidi and his brother Michael Omidi, MD announce their support of the Young Storytellers Foundation (YSF), a non-profit organization that brings arts education programs in dramatic writing and storytelling to underserved youth in Los Angeles. At YSF, kids are encouraged to write their own script and are given the resources necessary to stage them in a theatrical setting or even film them. with a small staff and more than 1,500 volunteers, including noteworthy professionals in the entertainment industry, YSF is able to provide outreach, one-on-one mentoring and contribute their time and talents to the kids.
“Creative arts programs are an under-represented and under-exploited area in public education,” says Michael Omidi, co-founder of No More Poverty. “Almost every professional endeavor is helped with the application of creative thinking and an appreciation of different cultures and philosophies. We at No More Poverty are proud to endorse the Young Storytellers Foundation for their efforts in bringing arts education programs to public schools.”
The Young Storytellers Foundation (http://www.youngstorytellers.com) is a volunteer initiative that provides sequential arts education programs to public elementary schools, with plans to branch into middle and high school. Schools and school districts do not pay for the Young Storytellers Foundation services; the program operates entirely with funds contributed from donors and friends of the program. The project began in 1997 when a group of young and passionate screenwriters decided to supplement public schools’ foundering arts programs with writing workshops that they would conduct themselves. The programs were created with the intent of fostering literacy and challenging the imagination by allowing the kids to not only tell their own stories, but by also giving them the opportunity to perform their works.
In addition to providing instruction in a classroom environment, the Young Storytellers Foundation offers summer camps and workshops in filmmaking, screenplay writing, theatrical staging and performance. The courses and programs are sponsored by entertainment industry heavyweights like Disney, Sony, Universal Studios and Fox. Every year, approximately 700 children participate in the different programs offered by YSF, and thousands of students attend public performances of the works of the program participants. YSF is very proud that 100% of students in the program complete a script of their own and see it performed.
No More Poverty (http://www.nmp.org) is a not-for-profit charity organization with a pending 501(c)3 application founded by brothers Michael Omidi, M.D. and Julian Omidi. The organization seeks to end poverty at home and abroad by supporting the efforts of like-minded charities and agencies. Current efforts are focused on increasing awareness of and donations to charities already doing great work to address poverty and its staggering effects throughout the world. The plan is to expand our activities to include fostering business development and job creation in disenfranchised areas.
