The co-founders of No More Poverty, brothers Julian Omidi and Michael Omidi, M.D. are encouraged by a recent declaration that extreme poverty around the world could be eliminated by the year 2030.
At this year’s Technology, Entertainment and Design conference (TED2013), rock superstar Bono, expressed his excitement, and frustrations about the recent progress made in the reduction of global poverty. According to the lead singer of the rock group U2, “extreme poverty has been cut in half in the last 20 years, and the facts show that we can get it to virtually zero within a generation — but only if we act.”
“We share Bono’s enthusiasm, and we also believe that the eradication of poverty is an achievable event,” says Julian Omidi, co-founder of the charity No More Poverty. “If we continue stridently and keep on our current course of diminishing the poverty rate by the millions on a yearly basis, we truly could succeed.”
During his speech (watch it at: http://www.one.org/us/shareworthy/bono-at-ted?gclid=COqM0YKUvLYCFQvnnAodU1IAxw), Bono stated that the major enemy of progress in the fight against poverty is complacency. “We can’t get this done until we really accept that we can get this done,” he said.
The number of people living in poverty (as defined as the number of people living on less than $1.25 per day) has been cut in half since 1990, and the mortality rate of children under the age of five years has dropped by 2.65 million since 2000, according to data from the global advocacy group ONE. In the United States, the homeless rate has dropped more than five percent since 2007, and the Obama administration has pledged to eliminate United States veteran homelessness completely by 2015.
“We hope that this data encourages, rather than slackens, the momentum of all of the millions of activists who have dedicated their time, resources and energy to fighting global poverty,” saysMichael Omidi, M.D. “We ask everyone to help us to meet the challenge of making poverty a thing of the past.”
