No More Poverty and its co-founders, the Omidi brothers are pleased to support UCP Wheels for Humanity in its goal to increase the mobility of the more than 59 million people with disabilities worldwide who need a wheelchair but cannot afford one.
Michael Omidi, M.D. and Julian Omidi, co-founders of No More Poverty, announce their support of UCP Wheels for Humanity, a nonprofit organization dedicated to providing wheelchairs to non-ambulatory people worldwide.
“Disabled people living in under-developed countries have a desperate need for wheelchairs; giving people access to mobilizing resources allows them to be active and productive members of society,” saysJulian Omidi, co-founder of No More Poverty. “We are proud to support UCP Wheels for Humanity, which helps to give people across the globe opportunities they wouldn’t otherwise have.”
It is estimated that more than 59 million children and adults worldwide are in need of wheelchairs and do not have them due to lack of access, lack of money, or both. Their immobility stems from accidents, birth defects, war injuries, debilitating diseases, aging, natural disasters and land mines.
UCP Wheels for Humanity (http://www.ucpwfh.org) was founded in 1985 in Studio City, California, where 130 wheelchairs were restored in a residential garage and given to disabled Guatemalan citizens. After only one year, UCP Wheels for Humanity grew so large that the operation was moved to a 10,000 square-foot warehouse in North Hollywood, where more than 60,000 wheelchairs have since been manufactured and donated.
The nonprofit refurbishes donated and abandoned wheelchairs and then delivers them to immobile people in need all over the world. These chairs are custom built for different uses and environments, and are even fitted especially for the intended users. UCP Wheels for Humanity also provides specialized technical training in order to provide users in different nations with the support they need for wheelchair modification and maintenance.
In addition to supplying specialized wheelchairs, UCP Wheels for Humanity strives to increase the profile of differently-abled people in order to remove the stigma so often attached. By giving them a platform and a voice, UCP Wheels for Humanity hopes to raise public awareness of the needs of the differently-abled communities all over the world.
No More Poverty (http://www.nmp.org) is a not-for-profit charity organization (with a pending 501(c)3 application) founded by brothers Michael Omidi, M.D. and Julian Omidi. The organization seeks to end poverty at home and abroad by supporting the efforts of like-minded charities and agencies. Current efforts are focused on increasing awareness of and donations to charities already doing great work to address poverty and its staggering effects throughout the world.
