The non-profit organization, the Himalayan Institute acknowledges the support of Michael Omidi, MD and Julian Omidi, cofounders of No More Poverty.
The Himalayan Institute expresses its gratitude to the and No More Poverty for their sponsorship of the Vida Project, an undertaking that provides the impoverished residents of Totonaca, Mexico with the technological training and nutritional guidance that will not only help them combat their diet related health crisis, but provide economic independence.
Obesity is a health problem that has reached beyond our borders. Cheap, highly processed and energy-rich but nutrition-poor foods are the main sustenance for many poor communities around the world, and this in turn has caused an explosion of obesity related diseases that could lead to a full scale health crisis. Mexico is one of the leaders in global obesity, with approximately 70% of all adults being classified as overweight and 30% as obese.
The Vida Project is a humanitarian initiative of the Himalayan Institute which seeks to provide the rural Mexican region of Totonaca with the agricultural resources necessary to lift itself out of poverty. The sponsorship and contributions of No More Poverty will help the Vida Project pursue its mission of providing regional farmers with the skills and knowledge to produce organic healthy crops that will not only feed the community but also provide a source of revenue.
“By introducing nutritional counseling along with high-yield home gardens, we enable the families in two ways: to understand healthy choices and to incorporate healthy food into their diet,” says Jeff Abella, Managing Director of the Vida Project. “We would like to thank No More Poverty and the Omidi brothers for their support of our goal of restoring the dignity of Totonac farmers while improving nutritional outcomes for Mexico as a whole.”
